New reimbursement data just in from CMS. Oxygen took a big hit in 2009

August 18, 2010Mike Moran

We just requested a whole bunch of data from CMS, and it has begun to trickle in. The data below is DMEPOS spending for the product categories that make up all of "Medical Equipment and Supplies." The most interesting data here relates to oxygen spending, which dropped by $800 million in 2009 compared to 2008, from $2.8 billion to $2 billion. Looks like the oxygen cap and 9.5% cut, which took effect Jan. 1, 2009, played out the way CMS hoped they would. Without further ado, here's the data. The dollar...

Ensure survival through change

March 16, 2010Don Clayback

For example, while they received an exemption from national competitive bidding, they also got hit with a 9.5% Medicare reduction effective Jan. 1, 2009. Unfortunately, there is neither a silver bullet nor a great business secret that can be used to solve the challenges stemming from reimbursement reductions. Companies have been forced to look at a variety of changes to ensure survival. Here are some things companies have done or...

Canadian oxygen providers feel your pain: "We're shocked by the lack of understanding"

December 8, 2009Mike Moran

I ran across this headline today on the Canadian NewsWire: "Ontario oxygen vendors shocked by lack of understanding of the Home Oxygen Program by the Auditor General's Office." Our northern neighbors labor under the same misperceptions as do U.S. home respiratory providers. Specifically, it seems that that Canadian government doesn't understand that a whole bunch of services go into providing patients oxygen therapy. Imagine that. Canadian providers want to make one thing clear: "Ontario's home oxygen...

Cops and robbers

July 9, 2009Mike Moran

.!. UPDATE: Here's AAHomecare's response to the Cleveland Plain Dealer article. Why does it seem like members of Congress and officials at CMS make things unnecessarily complicated? If they wanted to reduce reimbursement for oxygen in 2006, they should have reduced reimbursement. Why did they have to come up with a pricing scheme like a 36-month cap? That's what I was thinking, anyway, when I read this story published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on July 7. It details how patients...
